Tyranids from Deathwatch Overkill: Genestealer Cult initial Unit REVIEW

GenestealerCultArt

HQ:

Patriarch Ghosar, Magus Orthan Trysst and Primus Vorgan Trysst are HQ models. What do they have in common that makes them stand out? They all are Independent Characters. As a result they can be part of Tyranid units, they may freely leave and join them. Just as needed.

Patriarch Ghosar: Patriach Ghosar has the stats of a Broodlord. For his additional price tag of 55 points you receive the special rules Fear, Fearless, Hit and Run, Independent Character, Psyker (Mastery Level 2 on Telepathy) and Stealth. In addition, his claws come with AP3, Rending, Shred.

Patriach Ghosar will be taken because of the special rules Hit and Run, Independent Character, Psyker (Mastery Level 2 on Telepathy) and Stealth. Hit and Run is amazing. Stealth goes with Shrouded. Telepathy includes Invisibilty and Shrouding. All of this comes with a price tag, but in the right army the Patriarch is worth it.

Rating: Good choice

Magus Orthan Trysst: Magus Orthan Trysst is a support psyker. He will be included frequently due to his low point cost. His special rule Independent Character allows you to hide him. As a Psyker with Mastery Level 2 on Telepathy, you aim to go for Invisibility. The difference with Magus as compared to the Patriarch is that he can use Witchfire abilities. The Patriarch with BS 0 is usually considered as not being able to use Witchfire abilities. So no Psychic Shriek for the Patriarch.

Rating: Very good choice

Primus Vorgan Trysst: Primus Vorgan Trysst is a close combat themed character with a considerable damage output. However, he has the same defensive stats as Magus, meaning he will not live long if the enemy is able to hit back. This would usually make him a poor choice. All in all, he is the weakest HQ choice. However, he is an Independent Character which makes him appealing in my eyes. He could join units going into Tyrannocytes.

Rating: Good choice

Elite:

Purestrain Genestealers: 2 Purestrain Genestealers for 30 points. In addition to the special rules of normal Genestealers, they have Hit and Run as well as Stealth. They are probably an odd unit for 40K, but who wants to shoot at 2 models. Infiltrate them on an objective.

Rating: Poor choice

Hybrid Aberrants: 2 Purestrain Genestealers cost as much as 1 Aberrant. 4 Aberrants make up a unit. Aberrants have Rending Claws, DS 2 and 3 melee weapons. Their base Strength of 5 is increased by the Power Pick to 7 and by the Power Hammer to 8. The special rule Feel No Pain is another bonus. However, they only have Toughness 4 and a 5+ Save. To make a long story short, they are too expensive.

Rating: Poor choice

Troop:

The Faithful Throng [Hybrid with Mining Laser (x2), Hybrid with Grenade Launcher (x2), Hybrids with Autoguns (x12)]: This squad of 16 Neophyte Hybrids brings an interesting selection of 24” ranged weapons. With about 7 points per model the Neophyte Hybrids outshine regular Gants. Having a Mining Laser with Strength 9 and DS 2 is just handy, if nothing else. Otherwise there is nothing special about these guys with a stat line of 3s.

Rating: Very good choice

The Favoured Disciples: 12 Acolyte Hybrids with Autopistols, close combat weapons and Rending Claws are amazing close combat fighters; having Weapon Skill 4 and Strength 4 underlines this. Rending Claws and Strength 4 enable them to threaten vehicles. They have assault grenades and the special rule Fearless. Again for about 7 points per model, each of which has 3 attacks, the Acolyte Hybrids are the new bargain Genestealers. Do we need to say more? Just put them in a Tyrannocyte and let the mayhem ensue.

Rating: Very good choice

All the rules and point costs:

Neue Fraktion für 40k: Symbiontenkult

Deathwatch Overkill: 40k Regeln für die Deathwatch Marines und den Symbiontenkult
